So, it is certainly a thing that exists. But when can it be used?

I drive a lightly modified 2016 Jetta 1.8t Sport. It clearly isn’t fully stock, but isn’t too extreme either. The Volkswagen enthusiast can pick up that it’s an enthusiast owned car, but your average 17 year old girl who drives a daddy’s money GTI probably wouldn’t.

In the five months I’ve owned the car, I’ve exchanged head nods with an Mk4 GTI and a Mk7 GTI and waved at a Golf R (He waved back.) But I honestly don’t really wave at anybody unless they initiate the wave.

I like waving at other VWs for some reason, it gives me a sense of approval. So should I start waving more? It’s kinda weird to wave at people and then have them look at me like I’m a loon.

Today I learned there was a VW wave...

Just curious, modded how?

Fogs, headlights, grill and a few other small things. You can tell it’s not stock.

I had a good exchange with a fellow Mk7 Golf driver the other day. We arrived at a decently fun side road from opposite directions and immediately got stuck behind two slow CUVs. I put those swiftly behind me and noticed he followed quite eagerly. I made sure to carry some speed through the twisties and the other driver seemed happy to match my pace, apexing just as I was. At the next major road he pulled up next to me as we signalled different directions. A nod and thumbs up were exchanged, it made my day.

Nope, turns out there are a lot of 17 year old girls enthusiasts with modified Jettas out there.

I like doing the wave at other VWs too, I love the little sense of camaraderie I get whenever I wave and they wave back.

You should definitely start waving more, I’ve always found the head nodding more awkward whenever I pass another VW, especially when it happens too fast or it’s not obvious enough for me to notice.

It’s always to hear positive interactions in the non GTI VAG world. :P

Too lazy to type everything out, but it’s in here.

Tune, wheels and more low are coming soon-ish.

i though VW owners just saw the orange glow of check engine lights in the vape clouds rolling out their windows and that was it

“It gives me a densely approval”

This is the exact reason I hated driving a WRX. The motorcycle wave I get, as anyone on a motorcycle has a shared deathwish. Approval because of the brand of car you drive? Go fuck yourself.

For the diesel ones, it’s a puff of pollutants as the dead animals fall to the ground as you drive past.

I’ll give a wave or the male neck spasm of recognition to anyone I catch eye contact with in another performance oriented VW, GTI, GLI, Golf R. If I saw you rollin’ like a boss in your 1.8...I’ll give you props too.

However, a few times I’ve seen bros with slammed VWs driving like dangerous asshats try to roll up and get some recognition...I’m like “I don’t know you bro.”

It’s less about their taste and more about their behavior because they make the rest of us look bad.

Yup, a lot of the slammed bro types drive like assholes. Strangely enough, a lot of them actually know fuck-all about Volkswagens or just cars in general.... Strange how that works.

In Europe the wave is pretty much non-existent apart from specialist stuff like Beetles (and maybe GTis, Sciroccos etc).

See VWs are so common here if everyone waved they would have to look everywhere at once.
